If your teen plays sports in Penticton — whether it’s soccer, hockey, volleyball, or swimming — you know how competitive it can be. Athletes are always looking for that extra edge. The secret isn’t always more practice in their sport. Often, the difference-maker is strength training.
For girls especially, strength training is often overlooked. Yet it can be the difference between struggling to keep up and breaking through to the next level. That’s why we created StrongHER Teens in Penticton — a program designed to build strength, confidence, and resilience in a supportive girls-only environment.
Our daughter Emily loved swimming. She started in summer swim club and enjoyed competing, but she wasn’t the fastest in her group. In fact, she was often half a length behind the stronger girls in her races.
When she decided she wanted to move into winter club — year-round swimming — we knew she’d need more than just time in the pool. Like most 12-year-old girls, she had very little natural strength, and we wanted to protect her shoulders from the repetitive stress injuries that many swimmers deal with.
So we enrolled her in a once-a-week CrossFit Kids program in Grande Prairie. At the time, we weren’t sure what kind of impact it would have. We just hoped it would help her stay healthy and maybe build some strength.
I’ll never forget the moment I saw it working. I was volunteering as a stroke and turn judge at one of her meets, standing at the end of the pool as she held her backstroke start. For the first time, I could actually see muscles developing in her back. Watching her swim faster and smoother that’s when I knew the training was making a real difference.
Over the next eight months, the transformation was undeniable. At the Summer Games Trials, Emily went from trailing behind the fastest swimmers to racing alongside them — sometimes even beating them. Her progress was a testament to her hard work in the pool, but also to the strength and resilience she built outside of it.
Best of all, she stayed injury-free. While many swimmers her age struggled with shoulder pain and overuse injuries, Emily was stronger, healthier, and more confident than ever.
That experience showed us the power of strength training for young athletes — especially girls. It’s why we’re so passionate about programs like StrongHER Teens today.
