Why We Train the Way We Do: It’s About Healthspan, Not Just Lifespan

Why We Train the Way We Do: It’s About Healthspan, Not Just Lifespan

A recent Globe & Mail article highlighted a sobering trend: Canadian lifespans are decreasing for the first time in decades. While that’s alarming, what we really care about in the gym isn’t just lifespan — it’s healthspan. How many years do you actually get to live strong, independent, and capable of doing the things you love?

That’s why we do what we do at Beach City Fitness.

  • What we do: Focus on building healthspan — not just chasing numbers on a chart, but making sure you can climb stairs, carry groceries, get up off the floor, and live pain-free for as long as possible.
  • How we do it: Functional fitness in a group setting, with professional coaches guiding you. It’s more effective (and safer) than going it alone, and way more fun.
  • Why we do it: Because the time you put into training today pays off for decades.

We’ve seen it firsthand. Recently, we started working with someone who is 91 years old. At that age, strength and mobility aren’t “nice to have” — they’re the difference between independence and reliance.

If you’re already training, keep it up. Just showing up each week is your investment in your future self.

If you haven’t yet made movement and strength training part of your week, there’s no better time than now. Imagine being 40, 50, or 60 and knowing you’ve still got years to change the trajectory of your health. The best time to start was 10 years ago. The second-best time is today.

Your future self will thank you.
